Psalm 139:1 (NKJV) Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.

There are obviously many, many reasons to give thanks to our God, but there is one that the Word of God speaks about that perhaps we don’t give enough thought to, and that’s in the scripture verse above. Have you ever thanked God just because He is good?

Many people thank the Lord for things that He has done for them but if there is nothing currently that He has given them, they don’t thank Him. Our thankfulness to the Lord should be ongoing and for the sole reason that He is a good God, even without giving us anything. Have you ever thought of the dreadful existence that we would experience if God happened to be a harsh, or even worse, an evil God? And what if this harsh God would have just created us to toy with us and watch us suffer? But the exact opposite is true. Our God is not only a good God, good doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface! I wish that there was a better word to describe the goodness of God, but unfortunately, there isn't.

We have a God who didn’t destroy us when we were in rebellion against Him and violated His commandments. We have a God who immediately received us into His arms once we repented of our sins. Then He went beyond forgiveness, casting away our sins into the heart of the sea of forgetfulness never to rise again (Micah 7:19, Hebrews 8:12). In addition to that, He allows us to wear a robe of righteousness that we didn’t earn and calls us holy and considers us as royal priests. He’s a God whose love is so wide, long, high and deep that it surpasses knowledge, making it necessary for God’s power to help us to even begin to understand it (Ephesians 3:18-19). He’s a God who didn’t send someone else to rescue us, but who came personally to do it, enduring our hatred, our vile treatment of Him, and our murderous actions through nailing Him to a cross while He was here to save us. He is Emmanuel, which means God with us. That means that He desires to be with us, which is obvious by the fact that He went to the highest degree of sacrifice in order to do it. He then watches over us, guides us, delivers us, heals us when we are sick, rescues us when we get in trouble, comforts us when we grieve or are downhearted and who makes Himself available to us 24/7. There is no god like our God! He is totally unique and awesome, and He is greater than good!

This Thanksgiving Day, concentrate and give all of your thanksgiving to the God who has done everything possible for you and who loves you like no one else can or ever will. You can thank others another day, but reserve all of your thanksgiving, praise and adoration to our God who is worthy of it all, for He is good and His love endures forever!
